After you carefully choose a house for yourself, a splendid feeling flood your veins until you spot a bug in your house and the feeling vanishes. For most people, these bugs look the same, but of course, there are several types. To name a few: Bed bugs, Cockroaches, termites, mosquito and even Mice! And the question that requires answer is: Do we have to share our beautiful home with these unwelcome creatures of Nature? The Answer is: No. Then, the question that follows is: How do we make our home free from all of them? Well, the following will be of help.
It’s a must to know that bees and ants nest and breed on unfinished wood. That is, the wood which was left undone or painted briefly. So it’ Make sure all exterior wood is finished or painted. So make sure no unfinished good is lying around, it’ll only save you from bug trouble. Another type of Pest: termites. Termites mostly feed on dead plant material generally in the form of wood. It’s a careful step to keep all your firewood covered. Leave no wood around for the termites to feast on. Also, termites love damp areas, so make sure all rain water drains away from your home and doesn’t seep back into your foundation.
Then another pest that seems to be a constant problem in areas of South Carolina and Charleston is Cockroaches. Cockroaches are attracted to warm, moist environments. They spend the daylight hours in dark, secluded sites under refrigerators, stoves, false bottoms in kitchen cabinets, in the backs of cabinets and in crevices between baseboards and floors or cabinets and walls. They may also be found behind pictures or within electronic equipment. A number of these openings will ultimately lead to voids in the stud walls. The insects leave these sites at night to forage for food and water. So, it’s better to keep your food in sealed containers and keep your kitchen clean. Ants love food that’s sitting out (yes, even pet food), especially small traces of crumbs and spills you might not notice. But roaches do! Wipe down countertops and rinse sinks to eliminate attractive fruit juices.
Insects love animals, so keep your pets clean and use flea and tick repellent. Seal all cracks and holes that give bugs access to the inside of your house. Be sure to check crawlspaces and along the foundation. Though it’s not easy to constantly keep track of all the spaces that may provide accommodation for bug but it’s an effort worth making. Indoor plants may attract bugs, so check them regularly. If you find evidence of bugs, find a spray that targets just those bugs.
Get those dirty dishes off the table, out of the sink and washed up (or at least in the dish washer), right after every meal. Standing water and food particles attract all sorts of pests. Get garbage out of the house as soon as possible. Garbage should be in plastic bags, tied and placed in sealed/covered cans out of the sun as much as possible. Because the more the sun rays fell on the garbage, the garbage sweats and attracts pests. Get rid of all accumulated water and puddles near your home. These are choice breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
And with South Carolina and Charleston having humid climates it’s only a precaution that is a Must. Lights attract bugs; it’s in its nature to be fascinated by them. Try using motion-sensing outdoor lights. These not only save electricity and money, but they don’t serve as a constant attraction for bugs the way normal lights do. The above steps might not ensure the complete extinction of bugs from your beloved household, but it’ll reduce it down to the possible minimum.
