Scheels getting $1M remodel
By Emily Schettler
The Scheels All Sports store inside Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville is undergoing a more than $1 million facelift, one store official said.
The sporting goods store began work to remove some departments while expanding others a few months ago and likely will complete the renovations in June, Store Leader Cory Tweden said.
Tweden said the Gift Lodge at the center of the store has been removed to make room for youth- and women-specific areas.
The footwear shops are being redone, as are the service shop and customer service areas, he said.
Store officials looked at ways to expand the store and certain departments without removing the Gift Lodge, but Tweden said the current remodel was the most feasible plan.
"The Gift Lodge actually did really well," he said. "When we built this store, we built it with the intention to keep the lodge, but we've outgrown the space for the categories we have and there were areas we wanted to expand. The only way to do that was to take something out of the store."
Scheels opened in 1998, the same time as the Coral Ridge Mall, at 1461 Coral Ridge Ave.
The remodel of the more than 100,000-square-foot store is expected to cost between $1 million and $1.5 million, Tweden said.
In addition to remodeling the inside of the store, Scheels added some fresh faces at the entrance, he said.
Life size statues of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson have been added. Statues of the different presidents are being added outside many of the larger Scheels locations, Tweden said.
"It added something pretty unique in front of our store," he said. "Every time I come in and out, people stop and are looking at them."
